The needle matters as much as the machine
For denim and similar rigid woven fabric, SCHMETZ recommends its Jeans needle (sizes 70 to 110) and says it reduces the risk of needle breakage and skipped stitches. For thick genuine leather, it lists leather needles in 100 to 120. SINGER's chart pairs denim and canvas with a 16/100 denim needle. This SINGER pack has 90/14, 100/16 and 110/18 needles, including a leather point, per the listing.

SINGER Heavy Duty Needles, 90/14-110/18 (5)
- Two 90/14, two 100/16 and one 110/18, per the listing
- Listed for denim, leather, vinyl, corduroy and heavy wovens
- Sharp point (blue) and triangular leather point (brown)
And go easy on thread. SINGER says household machines are designed for all-purpose thread and that using heavy thread constantly will eventually damage the tension. With heavy thread, it suggests a size 16 or 18 needle and a longer stitch. More in our needle guide.
